We have experienced unusually high seasonal rainfall in the region thus far, with a regional average of 92mm for the current season as compared to 52mm by this time last year.
The rainfall has come in extended periods of consistent rain, as opposed to the previous season’s shortened rainfall periods with longer periods of hot and dry weather in between. The current pattern of rainfall has led to immense saturation of the ground this season, and plentiful surface-level water availability for animals. There has also been a high volume of water run-off because of the high water table resulting from the consistent and extensive rainfall.
Unfortunately, we have noted an increase in Common Myna sightings across the reserve. Although these birds have become naturalised in some areas of the country, they are considered an invasive species here and are known to aggressively outcompete indigenous species such as starlings and weavers, especially for nesting sites. We are actively trying to control the population, and as such we ask that you please continue to report any sightings - especially potential nesting sites. We thank you for your assistance with the vital reporting process - it is of great help to us.
