A hot and dry October is now behind us and as I write this the rumblings of thunder can be heard in the distance.
The bulk of the pre-season precipitation forecasts predicted above average summer rainfall for the greater lowveld area, as at the end of this reporting period, this had not yet materialized. We are hopeful that, as in previous seasons, we may expect heavier falls in the period post December into the new year. Rainfall for this past November was 24mm following on from the 20mm recorded in October. Fire risk fortunately remains low to moderate. Temperature ranges in this reporting month peaked at 41 degrees Celsius with a low of 14 degrees.
The electric fence infrastructure remains in good condition, with minor damages experienced again as a result of buffalo and the various antelope movement. Progress on the strengthening of the fence through the additional y-standard support has been slow. This will continue in mid-January.
Progress was made on the new solar installation for the Goedehoop pump. Trenching of the power supply cable and the sleeving of the electrical cable was completed. Once all electrical connections are completed the pump should be fully operational by mid-December.
Repairs were made to the two existing repeaters on Buffelsbed, we had noticed a distinct deterioration of the radio communications over the previous two months. This is now all repaired.
Malaria sprays for the December period commenced early this year as we were hoping to complete all spraying by the second week of December prior to the anticipated busy season.
Opuntia spp were again targeted in this reporting month. A total of 63 plants were treated successfully.
Water reticulation repairs were a focus area during November. Numerous main supply lines as well as supplies to bungalows were reported leaking and repaired. Water losses as a result were significant. Repairs were also required at The Platform and Buffelsbed Hide due to elephant damage.
I will once again make a plea for any sightings of Indian Mynah birds to be reported to either Reception or the Gate, with the specific location so that these non-indigenous birds can immediately be destroyed.
