We are pleased to introduce our two newest conservation students: Aimee Langenhoven (left) and Tegan Barnard (right).
These young ladies must participate in a practical year in the field to complete their diplomas in Nature Management, and to gain as much experience as possible.
With their unique interests and willingness to dive straight in, their introduction to Ingwelala could not have come at a better time in the wake of the flooding event experienced this month.
Here is a fun Q&A to get to know them:
Q: What is your favourite animal, and why?
A: If I had to choose one, it would be the rhino. They’re incredibly powerful, but with a quiet strength and resilience. There’s something about their presence that feels both powerful and peaceful - and I’ve loved them for as long as I can remember.
T: Elephants! They are extremely intelligent and great at problem-solving, and are very emotional animals who value family, celebrate their loved ones, and grieve losses. They’re also loyal, protective and strong, but also gentle and kind - all values I admire and see in myself.
Q: What are you most excited about for this year?
A: Working with like-minded people who share the same love for conservation, and making an impact in environmental conservation in a beautiful reserve filled with amazing wildlife.
T: Continuing my growth in my role this year. Being a third-year student, I feel more confident in myself and the career I am working towards, so I am looking forward to learning more, challenging myself and building stronger relationships.
Q: If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?
A: Brazil, because I love learning about different cultures, traditions, foods, music and ways of life. Brazil also has energy in the people, culture and scenery, and looks like a place full of life and beauty.
T: Australia, as it has always been my favourite country outside of South Africa. I really love how passionate they are about conservation and caring for their wildlife, and how they treat and protect their animals. I would love to learn more about how they approach conservation and experience it for myself.
Q: What are your favourite hobbies?
A: Reading, especially animal-related books. I like to learn cool facts and information! I also really enjoy painting and drawing.
T: Reading, especially on my Kindle. I also love going to the gym and working on improving my strength. Ocean fishing and snorkelling are also a favourite. Most of all, though, I really love drinking coffee!
