Leopard Markings

Over the last year or so we have had a lot of leopard activity around our bungalow to the extent that in the last week Auriel and I have had two different leopards drink at our little water feature while we sitting out. They were both males, one young and the other rather large but there have also been two different females that we have captured on camera at the pond.

We had noticed that leopard were scent marking or spraying the back wall of the bungalow over the last year or so, and then more recently leaving scats as calling cards on and next to the back step. At the height of activity three corners of the bungalow were being marked and a huge urine spray on our glass sliders.

Our son set up a camera trap facing the back door for a week that no-one was here. I have extracted a few pictures as they tell a fascinating story.

The back wall adjacent to the door has been repeatedly sprayed and despite our efforts to wash this off eventually left permanent stains and these can be seen as the leopard decided to start just around the corner and then walks off around the house.

A hyena is the first visitor to investigate, followed by a family of warthogs. The warthogs spent a long time and it was almost like the mothers giving an educational lecture to the little ones. There were masses of pictures of the warthogs and one little chap just didn’t want to leave. The banded mongooses also visited the site twice….
